Membership Engagement Research Project Overview

We are embarking on an exciting journey to better understand our church community and how we can best serve your needs. In partnership with Southwestern Adventist University’s Business and Institutional Research Departments, we are launching an anonymous Membership Engagement Research Project to gather your valuable insights on various aspects of your church experience.

This project looks to answer important questions such as:

  • Who are we? Understanding the demographics and characteristics of our diverse membership.

  • How engaged are we? Exploring current levels of participation in worship, ministries, and giving.

  • What motivates us? Gaining insights into your preferences and needs for a thriving church community.

Our commitment:

  • The pastoral team will be in the loop with each stage of the project and all surveys, questions, and phases will be vetted by the pastoral team.

  • Internal giving data we will provide for student analysis will be stripped of any identifying information and completely anonymized.

  • Southwestern’s Department for Institutional Research and Dr. Sargent have given verbal agreement this project may move forward as it falls in the exempt category.  The proposed means and methods used are of minimal to no risk and do not require protocols to mitigate associated risk, such as an internal review board.

  • Surveys and interviews will be optional to those surveyed and focused on attendance/engagement and not contain any questions regarding finances or giving.

  • The data analysis is to identify patterns, characteristics, and qualities of the membership as a whole, not to inquisition individuals.

In conjunction with the Introduction to Data Analytics class and the Marketing Research class taught at Southwestern Adventist University during the Spring semester of 2024, Professor Jon Turk, Associate Professor of Marketing and Data Analytics, would like to conduct research into membership profiles, church attendance and participation, and giving patterns of the Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church. Questions to be researched may include, but are not limited to:

  1. What are the demographic and psychographic profiles of the various member segments of the Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church

  2. What percentage of the membership are actively involved (time, talents, & treasure) with the church

  3. What are the demographic and psychographic profiles of attendees to each of the three (3) distinct worship experiences (Daybreak, Elevate, Summit)

  4. What is the profile (or profiles) of members who actively participate (time and talents) in the ministry of the Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church

  5. How many giving units (families where one or more persons living in the same household contribute financially) are there in the Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church

  6. What portion of the church membership only contributes to Tithe

  7. What portion of the church membership only contributes to specific projects (not Tithe or CMO)

  8. What is the demographic and psychographic profile of donors who actively support all three (3) financial opportunities (Tithe, CMO, Projects)

  9. How many of the parents of students in our schools (KAES & CTA) attend one (1) of the three (3) worship services regularly and/or are actively involved in the ministry of the Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Here's the overview of data gathering:

  • Membership list that includes Names, Addresses, and family members living in the same household

  • Demographic and statistical information (32 different attributes) on current church members (purchased from USAData/SL360)

  • Coordinate with church treasurer to match giving to enhanced membership dataset (all data will be anonymized so no students will be able to see personally identifiable information)

  • Church Nominating Committee list (members filling elected or appointed positions)

  • Church Member involvement in ministry (secured through personal interviews with church members or surveys/questionnaires returned by members)

Data Security/Confidentiality:

  • All persons working with data will complete a confidentiality/Non-Disclosure agreement (whether they have access to personally identifiable information or not)

  • All data will be stored securely on an encrypted drive.

  • All data will be returned to the Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church at the completion of the research project

  • All data will be securely erased from personal or University computers using DoD multi-pass data destruction techniques

Here’s what you can expect:

  •  The internal statistical and demographic data gathering will begin first. Our treasurer, Jose Aparicio, and assistant treasurer, Marco Fernandez, will be working directly with Professor Jon Turk (our finance committee chair, and professor in the SWAU Business Department) to provide the anonymized data.

  • In the coming weeks we will send out a general survey to our membership. It will cover a range of topics related to your church experience, from worship attendance to volunteer involvement and giving patterns.

  • A random sampling of the membership will be selected for a personal interview. If you are selected, you will receive a phone call to establish a meeting time and then, upon your consent, be interviewed on the same range of topics as the general survey.

We encourage all members, regardless of age, background, or level of involvement, to participate in this important project as you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of our church. Your voice matters. Your honest feedback is invaluable in guiding church initiatives and ensuring that we remain connected and engaged with our members, and a vibrant and welcoming space for all.
